Carolina Panthers DE Charles Johnson tackles more than opposing ball carriers

There’s a lot of negative press surrounding NFL players and the national anthem almost everywhere you look, and during these times it’s difficult to find stories about the NFL and its players that are positive and uplifting. To combat this, SB Nation’s NFL sites have decided to focus on some of the good things our players do in their local communities to help bring some balance to the negativity that’s taking over the landscape Ryan Kalil Jersey. For Cat Scratch Reader’s part in this collaboration, we’re going to spend some time talking about the Charles Johnson Foundation. Every Panthers fan knows the Charles Johnson who suits up on Sundays in his 95 jersey and lines up at defensive end. What some fans may not know, however, is the immense amount of work Johnson does to give back to his hometown of Hawkinsville, GA and its surrounding area. The mission statement of the Charles Johnson Foundation, according to their website, is two-foldTo provide opportunities for under-serviced youth to reach their full potential through athletic, recreational, and educational programs and initiatives; andTo provide support for single African American mothers through proven programs and initiatives. For a short history lesson on his foundation, you can read the statement belowGrowing up, Charles was always a part of a team and learned the value of teamwork early. He strongly believes this is an important and valuable skill that all kids should learn because it can help motivate them to believe in themselves. He credits his success to his learning experiences and understanding the importance of preparation, education and dedication.Charles’ passion for philanthropy led him to launch the Charles Johnson Foundation in 2012, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing opportunities for under-served youth to reach their full potential through athletic Brenton Bersin Jersey, recreational, and educational programs and initiatives; and to provide support for single African American mothers through proven programs and initiatives. The Foundation’s primary geographic service area has been Middle Georgia. As the signature initiative of the foundation, the annual Charles Johnson Foundation Sports Academy and Community Weekend is Charles’ opportunity to give back to Middle Georgia youth and teach them life and team-building skills, in particular, how to say no to negative influences they may encounter. One of Johnson’s biggest areas of service has been providing college scholarships to high school students at his alma mater, Hawkinsville High School. Charles has sent 120 students over three years to the annual Black College Expo in Atlanta. He provides transportation, cost of admission and food. From 2012-2016, Charles has awarded $240,000 in college scholarships for 12 students. The two inaugural recipients of the scholarship program graduated from college in the spring of 2016. In 2016, Charles also expanded this program beyond Hawkinsville High School and presented two additional scholarships to senior student-athletes from area high schools’s charitable actions don’t just apply to the Hawkinsville, GA area, either. He’s also done some good work in the Charlotte community. He’s currently in the process of a $3.3 million project to convert an old firehouse in Charlotte to a restaurant. He’s also built affordable housing units for seniors in both Columbia and Rock Hill, SC and has plans to build more of them in the future. While he’s been one of the Panthers’ best defensive linemen on the field, he’s been an even better representative of the Panthers off it. With the work he’s done for his local community in Georgia and the Carolinas, Charles Johnson is one of the many reasons that I’m proud to call myself a Carolina Panthers fan.If you’d like to donate to the Charles Johnson Foundation, you can do so here. Also, if you’d like to check out some other Panthers-related charities, you can do that by clicking here.
